Ultrasound-Guided Pain Management Injections

What to Expect

Your care begins with a thorough assessment of your symptoms, medical history, and individual goals. From there, we develop a personalized treatment plan that may incorporate ultrasound-guided injections and complementary therapies to support your recovery, improve function, and address your specific needs.

Dr. Rollheiser, ND uses advanced, evidence-informed techniques to provide precise, targeted care for musculoskeletal pain and injuries. Ultrasound-guided injection allows for better visualization of muscles, tendons, ligaments, joints, nerves, and surrounding structures in real time, helping guide treatment directly to the intended area.

Whether you are experiencing joint pain, tendon injuries, ligament damage, or nerve-related pain, ultrasound guidance helps us deliver a more individualized approach to treatment.

How Ultrasound Improves Your Treatment Experience

Targeted Treatment
Ultrasound allows us to identify the specific structure being treated and guide the injection toward the intended location. This is particularly valuable when addressing deeper tissues or smaller anatomical structures that may be difficult to accurately target using landmarks alone.

Visualization of Surrounding Anatomy
Seeing the underlying anatomy in real time helps us navigate around important structures and make informed decisions throughout the procedure. This additional guidance supports procedural accuracy and helps minimize the risk of unintended tissue injury.

Greater Control During Procedures
Ultrasound provides continuous visual feedback, allowing us to monitor needle positioning and adjust our approach when necessary. This helps us tailor each procedure to the individual and the area being treated.

Radiation-Free Imaging
Ultrasound uses high-frequency sound waves to create images, so there is no exposure to ionizing radiation. It is a practical option for image-guided procedures and can be used repeatedly when clinically appropriate.

Minimally Invasive Treatment
Many ultrasound-guided procedures can be performed using a small needle rather than more invasive techniques. Accurate targeting may help reduce unnecessary tissue disruption and support a smoother recovery, although outcomes and recovery times vary depending on the procedure and condition being treated.

Personalized Care, Guided by Precision

Effective pain management starts with understanding the structures contributing to your symptoms. By integrating ultrasound imaging into our treatment approach, we can better visualize the area of concern, guide procedures with greater accuracy, and develop a treatment plan tailored to your needs.

Types of Injections Available

  • Platelet Rich Plasma (Arthrex Angel PRP System)

  • Prolotherapy

  • Hyaluronic Acid

  • Corticosteroids

  • Perineural Therapy

  • Trigger Point Therapy

  • Scar Tissue Therapy

1. Joint Pain and Degenerative Conditions

  • Osteoarthritis affecting the knees, hips, shoulders, and hands

  • Joint degeneration associated with aging, previous injuries, or repetitive stress

  • Frozen shoulder (adhesive capsulitis)

Depending on the condition and treatment used, injections may help reduce pain, improve mobility, and support a return to everyday activities.

2. Tendon Injuries and Tendinopathy

  • Tennis elbow (lateral epicondylitis)

  • Golfer’s elbow (medial epicondylitis)

  • Achilles tendinopathy

  • Rotator cuff injuries and tendinopathy

Tendon injuries can cause persistent pain, stiffness, and limitations in movement. Depending on the injury, treatment may focus on symptom relief, supporting tissue repair, or improving function.

3. Muscle Strains and Ligament Injuries

  • Muscle strains involving the hamstrings, quadriceps, and calf muscles

  • Ankle sprains and other ligament injuries

  • Medial and lateral collateral ligament (MCL/LCL) injuries

4. Back and Pelvic Pain

  • Facet joint-related pain

  • Sacroiliac (SI) joint pain

  • Degenerative spinal conditions

Back and pelvic pain can arise from a variety of musculoskeletal structures. Treatment recommendations depend on the underlying cause of your symptoms and the most appropriate approach for your condition.

5. Nerve-Related Pain and Entrapment

  • Carpal tunnel syndrome

  • Selected cases of nerve-related pain

Irritated or compressed nerves can cause pain, tingling, numbness, or changes in sensation. Ultrasound allows us to visualize nerves and nearby structures during appropriate injection procedures, helping guide needle placement while minimizing unintended contact with surrounding tissues.

A Treatment Approach Tailored to You

Not every condition requires an injection, and the most appropriate treatment depends on your symptoms, examination findings, and diagnosis. Ultrasound-guided injection therapy may be used alongside rehabilitation and other conservative treatments to help manage pain, improve function, and support your recovery.

Ultrasound-Guided Injection Process

Consultation (Injection Screening Visit)

  • Your first appointment includes a thorough evaluation with Dr. Rollheiser where she will review your medical history, discuss your current symptoms, and assess your condition. If applicable, she may also review existing diagnostic imaging to help guide your care.

  • Based on your assessment and treatment goals, we’ll develop a personalized care plan. Recommendations may include ultrasound-guided injections, rehabilitation strategies, regenerative therapies, and other appropriate treatment options.

Treatment Costs

We aim to provide clear, accessible pricing so you can understand your options and plan your care with confidence.

Step 1: Injection Screening Visit — $150

Typically eligible for naturopathic (ND) benefits, depending on your insurance plan.

This initial appointment focuses on evaluating your condition, reviewing relevant medical history and imaging, and determining whether injection therapy may be appropriate. Treatment options and next steps will be discussed. Injections are generally performed at a separate appointment.

Step 2: Injection Appointment

Typically eligible for naturopathic (ND) benefits, depending on your insurance plan.

  • 20 minutes: $150

  • 30 minutes: $225

  • 1 site PRP injection: $500

  • 2 sites PRP injection: $550

Ultrasound guidance is included at no additional charge for applicable injection procedures, allowing us to visualize the relevant structures and guide needle placement in real time.

Product Fees

In addition to the injection appointment fee, separate charges apply for the medical supplies and products required for each procedure. These costs vary depending on the type of injection and are typically not covered by extended health benefits.

By separating procedure-related supplies from the appointment fee, we aim to maximize the portion of your visit that may be eligible for naturopathic benefit coverage. We are committed to transparent pricing and do not apply a markup to the supplies or products used.

Supply and Product Costs

  • Corticosteroid Injections: $35-$50

  • Hyaluronic Acid Injections: $415
Pricing varies depending on the product selected. We currently offer Durolane, however are able to bring in Cingal, and SportVis.

  • Trigger Point Injections: $20

What types of injections do you offer?

1

Yes. An initial screening appointment allows us to review your medical history, assess your symptoms, examine the affected area, and determine whether injection therapy may be appropriate. Relevant imaging, such as X-rays or MRI scans, may also be reviewed.

In most cases, injections are scheduled separately from the initial assessment.

Do I need a consultation before receiving an injection?

2

Not necessarily. If you have previous imaging, such as X-rays, MRI scans, or diagnostic ultrasound reports, please bring them or arrange to have them forwarded to our clinic. Your doctor will determine whether additional imaging or investigations are needed to support your assessment.

Do I need imaging before my appointment?

3

What is ultrasound-guided pain management injection therapy?

4

Ultrasound-guided injection therapy uses real-time ultrasound imaging to visualize muscles, tendons, ligaments, joints, nerves, vessels, and other soft tissues during an injection. This allows your doctor to guide needle placement toward the intended treatment area and visualize the surrounding anatomy throughout the procedure.
